Balsam Poplar, known as Populus balsamifera, is a native North American tree, widely distributed across Canada. This deciduous tree can reach impressive heights of 60 to 80 feet with a spread of 20 to 30 feet. It is hardy in zones 2 to 6, demonstrating its adaptability to various cold climates.

Ideal growing conditions for Balsam Poplar include moist, well-drained soils. It thrives in full sun, essential for its vigorous growth. The tree is particularly adaptable to riverbanks and wetlands, but can also grow well in upland areas with sufficient moisture.

Historically, Balsam Poplar has been significant in various indigenous cultures. Its resinous buds were used medicinally for their antibacterial properties. The wood, being soft and easy to work with, was used for various utilitarian purposes.

Balsam Poplar is notable for its aromatic, resinous buds that give off a pleasant balsam scent, especially in spring. The tree produces yellowish-green catkins in early spring before the leaves emerge. Its leaves are dark green, turning yellow in the fall.

It is valued for its fast growth, environmental benefits, and the unique balsam fragrance of its buds, making it a notable species in both naturalized and urban settings.

Balsam Poplar along with Cottonwoods and Willows are commonly rooted from dormant hardwood cuttings. Push at least half way into the ground and keep well watered for the first summer.
