Viburnum opulus, commonly known as Guelder Rose, is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 4-5 meters tall. It is renowned for its attractive three-lobed, maple-like leaves which turn a stunning reddish-purple in autumn. The leaves are 5-10 cm long and broad, with a rounded base and coarsely serrated margins. In early summer, it produces showy white flowers in large corymbs, each comprising a ring of outer sterile flowers surrounding a center of small, fertile flowers. These flowers are highly beneficial to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Following the blooming period, the shrub bears bright red drupes containing a single seed each. These berries are technically edible but very bitter, often used to make jellies.

Viburnum opulus is adaptable to a variety of soil types and prefers moist, moderately alkaline soils. It is commonly used as an ornamental plant for its flowers and berries, and as a component of hedgerows and naturalistic plantings. Although native to Europe, northwestern Africa, Asia Minor, the Caucasus, and central Asia, it has naturalized in North America.
