The Nanking Cherry is a small, deciduous shrub known for its showy spring flowers and edible fruit. It typically grows to a height of 6 to 10 feet with a similar spread, making it a compact choice for gardens and landscapes. This plant is hardy in USDA zones 2 through 7, demonstrating exceptional cold tolerance and suitability for a wide range of climates, including many areas in Canada. The Nanking Cherry prefers well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH and thrives in full sun, although it can tolerate partial shade.

One of the most appealing features of the Nanking Cherry is its abundant, fragrant, white to pale pink flowers that bloom in early spring, providing one of the first splashes of color in the garden. Following the flowering period, the shrub produces small, bright red cherries that ripen in mid to late summer. These cherries are tart but can be sweetened and are often used in jellies, jams, and pies. They are also a favorite among birds and wildlife.

Native to China and parts of Asia, the Nanking Cherry has been cultivated for its fruit and ornamental value. In addition to its use in gardens, it is often planted as a windbreak or for erosion control due to its hardy and spreading nature. The Nanking Cherry's early flowers, attractive fruit, and compact growth habit make it a popular choice for both ornamental and edible landscaping.
